C is after B

The Alphabet of Existence

Isn’t it fascinating how a simple arrangement of letters can spark such profound contemplation? This one-line poem, “C is after B,” elegantly captures a deep truth about the nature of wisdom and authenticity.

The idea that “C” (seeing or comprehending) comes after “B” (being) reminds me of what philosopher Martin Heidegger meant when he talked about “Dasein” or “being-there.” He believed that our existence precedes our essence – we first exist, and then through that existence, we come to understand ourselves and the world.

“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”

This concept echoes what psychologist Carl Rogers observed in his work on self-actualization. He found that people tend to grow towards their fullest potential when they’re able to be their authentic selves. As he put it, “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.”

The notion that wisdom follows authenticity brings to mind what Socrates meant when he said, “Know thyself.” True understanding, both of ourselves and the world, comes from a place of genuine self-awareness and acceptance.

So what does this mean for us? Perhaps it’s about recognizing that true insight comes not from trying to be something we’re not, but from fully embracing who we are. It’s about understanding that wisdom isn’t something we achieve by striving, but something that naturally unfolds when we’re true to ourselves.

“He who knows others is wise; he who knows himself is enlightened.”

Remember, every moment of authentic being is a step towards deeper understanding. As the Tao Te Ching says, “He who knows others is wise; he who knows himself is enlightened.”

So next time you’re seeking wisdom or insight, consider: How can you first be more authentically yourself? Because isn’t that what makes personal growth so powerful? This realization that our truest self is the foundation for all understanding. Your authentic being is the key to seeing clearly. How will you embrace your “B” to discover your “C” today?
